Second Life/Robbie Dingo

Vincent Van Gogh's The Starry Night was evocatively portrayed (echoed?) in Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) by Don McLean. We will watch a video by Rob Wright that remixes both in Second Life: Watch the World(s).

The Starry Night (MOMA, 1889) a painting by Vincent Van Gogh.

Vincent (Starry Starry Night) (1971 United Artists Records) a song by Don McLean.

Two great works - a painting and a song about that painting - that need no archiving. They are so well known, so well reproduced they will never be forgotten. As eternal as the stars.

But what if we do re-mix these works? If we create a new mash-up / montage / pastiche using these works?

Are we are art-sluts or not? Can we celebrate what is not new?

Is this a way of re-newing contact with a work of art or are we merely stealing the aura of the originals?

Do we criticize Dingo because a lower level artist is appropriating the work of a higher level artist? Or is is that once a work has achieved a certain level of Aura that no one is allowed to re-mix it?

Are re-mixes and mash-ups adding to the archive or taking something away?

Should re-mixes be remembered or forgotten?

New World Notes: REMAKE THE STARS - Includes one very interesting comment:

"I'm going to be the lone dissenter, I can see -- but this seems like a lot of work to make a pale imitation of a popular masterpiece. If it was an exercise to master technique, that's one thing: that's why many artists copy other pieces, to explore and better understand the technique that created it, NOT to collect the borrowed interest of someone else's creation."

The whole comment is well worth reading. It is the last comment at the bottom of the post.

[edit] Afterward

Many people ask whether they can visit the 'film set' Robbie Dingo used to create Watch the World(s). Unfortunately this is not possible. After completing the video, the artist destroyed the Sim (land on Second Life) that he used to create and shoot the video.

The artist has created two other versions of the work: one is a series of out takes, the other is with different out takes and and entirely different sound track.
