[edit] The Art of the Interface
The current most often used method for humans to deal with computers is a graphical user interface (GUI) or metaphor based on work prepared at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) and other organizations in the 1970's.
A glimpse of a possible future is available in Second Life. It allows you to interact with objects in many clever ways. The issues are that people rarely go "home" and that when people gather they mostly appear as zombies tapping on their keyboard.
Issues with the current metaphor:
It is based on a soon-to-be outmoded papers and files on a horizontal desktop paradigm.
As the quantity of data increases, users can only find the data they are looking for without resorting to search engines.
The metaphor does not handle non-text data very well.
The computer interface of the future is likely to:
To be displayed in 3D in a highly interactive game-like ways.
Always appear the same way whether on-screen or in some sort of augmented reality or in hologram effect.
Be context sensitive by understanding that via GPS you are at home or work and by the clock that you have just arrived or are about to leave.
Supply you with what you need when you need it.
Should draw much upon the parallel processing capabilities of visual recognition and less upon the serial processing capabilities of text recognition.
Be eyes-up and draw upon more of a wall metaphor than a desk metaphor.
Be shareable with other users by being attractive and inviting to join in.
Not require you to "go" anywhere. On the contrary, it tries to bring everything here.
Be future-oriented as much as possible, very little nostalgia for human-generated forms. Desktops and video-recorders come and go, buit things like stars, cities, or even weather are things that will be around for a long time. Use these as sources for inspiration.
[edit] The Presentation
The presentation is not a game though it uses a game engine a starting point for programming.
The presentation is not entertainment though it uses a certain narrative as a source of inspiration.
The presentation is perhaps a blastosphere or embryonic form that needs much maturing if it is not to be stillborn.
